Henry Clay Brittain was a son of Colonel William H. Brittain (c.1800-1860s) and his wife Catherine Ogburn (1831-1923). In 1860, the family was living in Greensboro, and were the proprietors of the Farmer's Hotel. By 1870, Col. Brittain had died, and they were in Summerfield, Guilford County.

Around 1872, Henry C.Brittain had a brick store building built. For many years, it was considered an architectural and historical landmark in Summerfield. I do not know if it is still standing.

Henry married Mary Belle Craven (1871-1967) around 1893. She was a daughter of Rev. Jeremiah Field Craven (1838-1907), a Methodist minister and former Confederate soldier, and his wife Amanda Gray.

Henry and Mary Belle had three children: Clay Dwight Brittain (1894-1976), Guy Dennis Brittain (1895-1935) and May Maurine Brittain (1898-?).
