Kirby, Roger, died June 12, 1795, age 95
Litchfield Monitor. 19 June 1793
Died at Cornwall, the 12th instant, Mr. Roger Kirby in the 96th year of his age. His Grandfather came from Warwich, in England at the settlement of Hartford, about the year 1635, and afterwards removed to Middletown, where the deceased was born, in the year 1697. This instance of American Longevity may help correct the common Error of European Historians, — that the Human Race are diminishes in size and Age in America. Mr. Kirby retained his powers both of body and mid, in a remarkable manner, till a few days before his death; which seemed to be occasioned, rather by an accidental disorder, than the usual decay of age.

Although panegyricks on the dead, (in the modern style) too often abound with fulsome Adulation; yet Justice to the deceased requires us to say, he was a useful Citizen, and an honest man; and the long period of his life, was uniformly marked with universal Benevolence, and unaffected Christian piety. Equally a stranger to vain Levity, and gloomy Melancholy, he met death with perfect serenity, as a friendly Messenger to relieve him from the infirmities of this life, and remove him to that perfect Felicity, he had long fully expected, through the mediation of a blessed Redeemer.

panegyrics = a public speech or published text in praise of someone or something
