Henry Pindell Slane, 81, of Peoria, former chairman of the board and chief executive officer of the Journal Star, died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002, at Proctor Hospital.

Born Dec. 29, 1920, in Peoria to Carl Powell and Frances Adelia Pindell Slane, he married Dorothy Jean Childs.

Surviving are two sons, John Pindell Slane of Peoria and Henry Pindell Slane Jr. (and Roxan) of Marco Island, Fla.; and two daughters, Elizabeth Jean (and Edward) Stealy of Geneva and Barbara Childs (and Brad) Bacon of Versailles, Ky.

He was a Navy veteran.

The newspaper was founded in 1889 by his maternal grandfather, Henry M. Pindell. After many merges over the years, the Journal Star was formed in 1954, with his father as publisher.

He graduated from Yale University and formerly was president of Illinois Valley Communications Inc.

He originated the Employee Stock Ownership Plan at the Journal Star in 1983. He was a member of the American Society of Newspaper Editors.

He was appointed a trustee of the Lincoln Academy of Illinois in 1970, which honored Illinois citizens for outstanding contributions toward the social progress of mankind. He served as honorary chairman of the Walk for Mankind in 1971.

He served on the board of directors of Ozark Airlines, First Federal Savings and Loan Association, First National Bank of Peoria, Peoria Development Corp., Carver Community Center and served on the advisory board at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center. He also served on the first board of directors of UPGRADE.

In 1968, he was named by Gov. Otto Kerner to serve on the statewide Illinoisans for Pure Air and Water Committee.

In 1985, he received the Mento Award for community involvement and, in 1991, he was presented the A.S. Oakford Award for community service by Neighborhood House Association.

There will be a private memorial service for the family only.
