The son of Jesse & Magdalena (Stermer) Hildebrand, in 1860 he was a laborer living with his family in Hopewell Township, York County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 9" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of nineteen in York September 2, 1861, mustered into federal service there September 14 as a private with Co. C, 87th Pennsylvania Infantry, and promoted to corporal, date as yet unknown. He was captured at Petersburg, Virginia, on June 22, 1864, and incarcerated in the stockade at Andersonville, Georgia, until October 31, 1864, when he was transferred to Millen Prison. Paroled at Jacksonville, Florida, on April 28, 1865, he honorably discharged the service to date June 11, 1865, nine months after his scheduled time.

He married Leah Jane Smith September 19, 1865, and fathered Ida Jane (b. 10/01/66), Susan (b. 09/01/68), Minnie Belle (b. 07/18/70), Robert Rossen (b. 09/12/72), Rose A. (b. 03/16/76), Flora Della (b. 09/09/77), Clara Caroline (b. 11/18/80), Palmer Marion (b. 12/23/84), and son (b. 03/04/87).

The date of his move to Ohio is as yet unknown. His middle name also reported as "Samuel."
