Born on June 20, 1884, Mary Ross Calvert was the daughter of Ebenezer and Alice Calvert. She was born in Nashville, Tennessee. She was the oldest of four daughters. Her father was co-owner of the Calvert Bros. Photography Studio.

In 1905, Mary began to work at Yerkes Observatory as an assistant to her uncle, astronomer Edward Emerson Barnard. Barnard was a professor of astronomy at the University of Chicago. He discovered Barnard's star.

Mary was an astrophotographer. When her uncle died in 1923, Mary became the curator of the photographic plate collections. She worked there until 1946. Since she had no petition, she had to work part-time in her sister's photography studio.
