Melissa J. Aughe was born May 23, 1841, in Williamsport, Ind., and died at her Ashland home Tuesday, March 11. The Aughe family was one of the first three or four families to settle in the immediate vicinity of Ashland coming in the year 1859. The deceased was married in Indiana to G. W. Whitelock, who preceded her in death, his demise occurring in 1904.

In 1907 she was married to William Chandler, who with three sons, J. F. Whitelock of Peetz, Colo., J. G. Whitelock, Jr., living in Ashland, and R. M. Whitelock of Montana.

J. G. Whitelock her husband joined the army during the memorable struggle of the 60's and while visiting him she volunteered as a nurse, and served on the battlefield of Shiloh.

The deceased was a woman of real pioneer character, kind and generous--but few of the earlier settlers are now living to pay homage to her and her kind deeds.

Mrs. Chandler was of a retrospective disposition, and had many ancient treasures. One being a copy of the Ulster Co. Gazette of January 4, 1800, giving in detail the death account of General George Washington, the action of Congress and the expressions of foreign countries and rulers. Also a law book more than 100 years old.

The funeral services were held last Friday from the Methodist church, Rev. Slocum officiating. Interment in the Ashland cemetery.

Whitelock and wife, Peetz, Colo., John Chandler, Pacific Junction, Ia., Mr. and Mrs. E. Chandler, Lincoln, Harry Chandler, Lincoln, Mrs. J. C. Coffman, Lincoln. The floral offerings were many and beautiful, coming from Chicago, Omaha, Lincoln and Greenwood.
