Pvt. William H. Faulk of Co E, 36th Regiment North Carolina, 2nd NC Artillery enlisted in Brunswick County at age 15, April 9, 1863, to serve the duration of the war as a substitute. He was captured at Fort Fisher on January 15, 1865, and confined at Elmira, New York, until paroled for exchange on the James River on March 2, 1865, and then admitted to the Confederate hospital at Richmond, Virginia, on March 6, 1865. He was furloughed for 30 days on March 28, 1865. Pvt. Faulk, age 17, was the youngest prisoner captured at Ft. Fisher to be sent to Elmira. The average age was nineteen.
