An auto accident near Bartlett, Mo., some eighty or more miles west of Poplar Bluff, brought death to Gerard F. Callihan, Sr., well-known local electrician, Monday morning. Mr. Callihan died in an ambulance en route to a Poplar Bluff hospital, because of internal injuries. His companion, Herman Lamb, also of this city, suffered from bruises and cuts, but his injuries do not appear to be of a serious nature.
Lamb and Callihan left Caruthersville about 4 o'clock Monday morning for a hunting shack at Peace Valley, where they intended to spend some time hunting. Near Bartlett about 9:30 o'clock the light pickup truck which Mr. Callihan was driving skidded on a railroad crossing and overturned several times, throwing Lamb clear, but pinning Callihan under the car. The roads in that section were slick from freezing rain.
Several passersby succeeded in lifting the car so as to free Mr. Callihan, and he walked some 200 yards to a service station where he awaited an ambulance which had been called from Van Buren. He remained seated most of the way toward Poplar Bluff, but some distance out he expressed a desire to lie down. Soon afterward it was noted that his breathing had ceased, and examination showed he was dead. His chest had been crushed and his lungs were congested with blood from an internal hemorrhage.
The LaForge ambulance was sent to Poplar Bluff to pick up the body, and Mr. Lamb accompanied the body home.
Funeral services for the deceased were conducted at the Methodist church Wednesday morning at 10:30 o'clock by the Rev. W.L. Meyer, and interment was in Little Prairie cemetery.
Mr. Callihan was born near Pickens, Miss., on June 27, 1879, being 59 years, 5 months and 29 days old at the time of his death. He was married to Miss Eugenia Claire Wardlaw, Oct. 12, 1904. Thirty years ago they came to Caruthersville and engaged in electrical work, for many years operating a small electrical appliance shop and doing electrical contracting and a general electrical business.
He is survived by his wife, two sons, Gerard, Jr., and Frederick O. Callihan, all of Caruthersville; one sister, Mrs. Susan Morton of Pickens, Miss.; and three nephews, one niece and one grandchild. Three children of Mr. and Mrs. Callihan died in infancy.
