Julius Lafayette MacDonald was born in Gainesboro, Virginia, on April 15th, 1857. He was the son of Gabriel Russell McDonald (1827-1901) and Elizabeth Ann Whitacre (1838-1862). He completed his second year of college.

Julius was married three times. First, to Sara "Sadie" C. Agner (1861-1905), on April 5th, 1883, in Putnam County, Ohio. They had ten children, six daughters and four sons. Following Sara's death, he married Emma May Kelly (1864-1914), on January 7th, 1909, at Anderson, Madison County, Indiana. The couple had a daughter. Finally, following Emma's death, Julius married Elsie Celiste Hobbs (1885-?), on August 4th, 1918, at Utica, Licking, County Ohio. The couple had one son.

Early in life, Julius worked on his father's farm. Brother MacDonald was a Christian, who preached the gospel of Jesus Christ for churches of Christ.

Julius Lafayette MacDonald died in Utica, Ohio, on January 3rd, 1944. He is buried in the Eden Cemetery in Newark, Ohio.
