Veronica Gibbons Balfe Shields was born in 1891 in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of Austin P. Gibbons and Veronica Fitzpatrick. She was raised on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, and lived with her family in their townhouse at 130 West 47th Street.

She married Harry Russell Balfe. They were later divorced. She later married Paul V. Shields, a prominent Wall Street business executive. They remained together until her death.

She was an active member of the Roman Catholic Church, and was a communicant of Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary Church, Southampton.

Veronica resided at 1 Sutton Place on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. In addition to her townhouse, she also maintained a residence on Ox Pasture Road in Southampton and a home in Palm Beach, Florida. She lived in Paris, France in the years following the dissolution of her first marriage. She was well-known in society and charity circles in New York City, Long Island, and Florida.

On Tuesday, October 28, 1958, at her home on Long Island, Veronica peacefully passed away of natural causes.

She was survived by her beloved husband, Paul; one daughter, Veronica "Rocky" (Gary) Cooper, of Holmby Hills, Los Angeles, California; brothers, Cedric (Hazel) Gibbons, of Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, and Eliot (Irene) Gibbons, of Beverly Hills, California; and her granddaughter, Maria. She was preceded in death by her parents.

A Requiem Mass was celebrated on Thursday, October 30, 1958 at 12:00 p.m. in Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary Roman Catholic Church located at 168 Hill Street in Southampton.
Veronica was laid to rest following the conclusion of the Mass in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Southampton.
