Charles LeRoy (Roy) MELLEN was actually born in Roslyn, Queens County, Long Island, New York, USA. This web site only allows the current county for Roslyn, which is Nassau County. Nassau County was made from Queens County 1 Jan 1899.

Roy was born in 1894. He had English {HICKS} and Scottish {MELLEN} Ancestors.

Charles LeRoy "Roy" Mellen and Cassandra William (nee Taylor) married 26 Dec 1915, at Saint Paul's Episcopal church on Glen Street, Village of Glen Cove, Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County, Long Island, New York.

Roy and his wife, Cassie's only child, Sherald Virginia Mellen's Connecticut Birth Certificate states that Roy was born in "Mineola", Queens County, Long Island, New York. I, his Granddaughter by Virginia, believe "Roslyn" is correct. Roy and Cassie lived in Mineola for many years afterward, and were residing in Connecticut when Ginny was born. Roy was an excellent Carpenter, and his job at the Remington Arms Factory, was building shipping crates for American rifles during world War I, and was the reason they lived in Bridgeport, Fairfield County, Connecticut in 1916.

The Town of "Roslyn" was named on 7 Sep 1844. It was originally named "Hempstead Harbor". Many Hempstead Post Office names have been confused. The name "Roslyn" was derived from "Roslin Village, Midlothian, Scotland".

Occupation: Finish Carpenter...he was excellent at this trade! He worked on many of the "North Shore of Long Island" mansions, which the wealthy owners deemed as "cottages"! He built beautiful staircases and their banisters; he installed lovely, intricate, inlaid, Parquet floors; he built excellent kitchen, library, etc., cabinets and shelves. He hung the windows that used to have "weights and cords" within the walls...and he remembered the mathematical dimensions of those windows until he died!

He also worked on many commercial buildings on Long Island, New York. He built three homes on Long Island, one of which was for his Parents. The two he built for his wife and daughter were "taken back by the bank" during the Great Depression, because he couldn't find work. They moved to Florida for a year to find a job.

About Him: He was a faithful, honest, hard-working and true man. He was the most excellent Grandfather! So loving and kind. He was tolerant of this little girl, sitting on his lap, in the middle of his trying to read his newspaper! I would place a nickel, back and forth, in the hollows of his shoulders by his neck, as he was a very slender man, and those hollows were prominent! He never minded at all!

When I would be staying with Gramma and Grampa (who lived down the street from us in the Love Field area of Dallas about 1952), I would run my little, four-year-old chubby legs, down the sidewalk to greet him when he came home from work. His favorite TV news show would be on, John Cameron Swayze's and David Brinkley's "Camel News Caravan", and I would babble to him excitedly, "Gampie! Gampie! Cabble, Cabble Caravan is on!" He would rearrange his lunch box so he could swoop me up and carry me inside, with the biggest grin on his face! One time, I was sad about something, and I told him to please "take off his [wool] coat so I could cry on his shirt"! My Grampa loved me, and I adored him!
