Oldest Citizen Rites Held
CLAY CENTER - Funeral services were held at the Christian Church Sunday for William Anthes, a pioneer resident of Clay county for nearly 70 years and Clay Center's oldest citizen, who died Thursday.

William Anthes was born in Germany August 7, 1851, and at the age of five years he came with his parents to America and settled in Illinois. In 1872 he came to Nebraska and located in Marshall township in Clay county, where he farmed for many years, later retiring from the farm and moving into Clay Center where he had since made his home.

On January 2, 1879 he was united in marriage to Miss Lavina [sic] Elizabeth Starr, and 11 children were born to them. His wife and two children preceded him in death.

He is survived by four sons and five daughters, Ezra whose whereabouts are unknown, Charles of Plattsmouth, Sidney of Stratsford, Tex., Floyd of Clay Center; Mrs. Martha Herrmann of Wood River, Mrs. Catherine Hughes of Rockville, Mrs. Bessie Berkstresser of Edmund, Okla., Mrs. Clara Squires [sic] of Pavillion, Wyo., and Mrs. Cora Hughes of Sherwin, Ore.

Services Sunday were conducted by the Rev. Robert E. Hanson of Clay Center, and burial was in the Marshall township cemetery east of Clay Center.
