Matthew Waugh Knoll was born July 12, 1843, in Summit county, Ohio, and departed this life February 9, 1927, at the age of 83 years, six months and 27 days.
In the year of 1845 he came with his parents to Dundee, Monroe county. Here he grew to manhood and received his early training, which was both Christian and educational.
At the age of 24 years he came to Sebewa, Ionia county, and was one of the pioneer settlers, living on the farm he cleared out of the forests, until death came.
He was united in marriage to Miss Isabelle Creighton, November 26, 1868. To this union were born four daughters and one son.
In his early days he taught in the district schools surrounding him. He was a pioneer member of the Wesleyan Methodist church, remaining loyal to his church and Sunday school until old age crept on him, also occasionally ministering in the word of God.
About five weeks ago he was stricken with paralysis. All was done that loving hands could do, to relieve his suffering, but the Lord saw best to take him to Himself.
Surviving him are his loving wife and four children, Clara Rodgers of Odessa, Curtis Knoll of Nashville, Jennie Leak of Sebewa and Ethel Durkee of Brighton, one daughter, Mary Blossom having preceded him in death; 22 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and one brother Boyd L. Knoll of Portland, Ore., besides a host of relatives and friends.
We shall miss him but we feel that our loss is his gain.
The funeral was held at the farm home Saturday, February 12, Rev. L. A. Clark having charge of the service. Music was furnished by Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Goodemoot. Burial was in the Baptist cemetery.
