During the Civil War, James served in the 6th Ind. Co., 1st Reg. Of N.Y. Sharp Shooters. The following information was found in his pension papers (App. #4 35225, Cert #251613, dated 15 Dec 1881). When describing himself "(I was born in New Lisbon, Otsego. N.Y., 5'7" tall, dark complexion, blue eyes, dark hair and a farmer." A description of his service "was appointed Mail carrier Jan 1, 1863 to Jan 3, 1864. Battalion was in action at Suffolk, Va., Apr 17, 1863 and at Weldon Railroad Aug 18-21, 1864. Prisoner of War Records show him captured near Petersburg, Va., Aug 19, 1864. * Sent to Libby Prison, Richmond, Va., then to Belle Island, then to Salisbury Prison, N.C. (See pgs. 101-04 for more on the Prison.) On the 26th day of Nov 1864 was shot by the Rebel guard in left thigh. Was treated at Hospital for his wounds. Paroled at Cox's Wharf, Va., Mar of 1865. Admitted to Hospital Div. #1, Annapolis, Md. Honorably discharged at Rochester, N.Y., on June 27th 1865." James never recovered his health after the war. Relief granted to family by town was $206.00.
