Bachelors' Peak

Seven miles southeast of Lampasas is the far-famed Bachelor Peak. Many inquiries have been made as to how this promontory acquired its title. On Christmas day, 1847, a party of eight buffalo hunters, all bachelors, ate their dinner on the top of the peak, and as a compliment to themselves, they called it Bachelors' Peak, and from that good day to this it has been so called, and doubtless will be until the end of time.
At that time the country was a howling wilderness; buffalo roamed the prairies and the red man was in his glory. Every fall and winter bands of white men came in from the settlements to enjoy the sport of killing buffalo.
Among the eight men who christened Bachelors' Peak was Alex. Brown, who was so brutally murdered at this home thirteen miles west of Lampasas on the night of December 31, 1886.
