died of typhoid on August 22, 1864. he is buried in the Andersonville National Cemetery under the name J. F. Ashby.
His widow Rebecca applied for a pension in 1871 and in 1883 she was receiving $8 per month. She lived in Hollow Rock, TN in the 1890 veterans' census.
