Evelyn Eloise Page Porter, 90, of Wilmington, died Saturday (Sept. 5, 2009) at Quaker Heights in Waynesville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas C. Porter, who died July 16, 1963. They were married April 5, 1942.

Mrs. Porter was born Oct. 5, 1918, in Wayne Township, daughter of the late Elmer Jack and Stella McPherson Page. She graduated from Wayne Township High School. She was a member of the Wilmington Friends Meeting, Beta Sigma Phi sorority, Eastern Star, Elks Auxiliary, Mother's Club and Oriental Shrine. She also was a 4-H Club advisor for several years.

Being primarily a homemaker, she was adept at embroidery and making crafts. She enjoyed preparing fancy salads and creating delicious desserts. She served as a 4-H cooking club advisor for several years. Her favorite activities were socializing with friends and attending club meetings. Her private time was devoted to reading, flower gardening and collecting wine glasses.

She appreciated theater, attending Broadway shows in Cincinnati and enjoying Wilmington College Summer Theatre productions. She especially enjoyed Hugh Heiland NYC Broadway tours.

During World War II, German prisoners were encamped in tents behind the Clinton County Infirmary. She prepared lunch daily for the 15 young soldiers who worked on the Porter family farm.

Mrs. Porter traveled extensively throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and Cuba with her family. Later, with friends, she traveled the world, visiting Africa, South America, Europe, India and the Far East.

Her four grandchildren and great-granddaughter were a source of pride and enjoyment. She is survived by a son; a daughter; a brother; a sister; four grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; two nephews; and four nieces.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Howard Page and Raymond Page.

Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at New Antioch Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wilmington Friends Meeting, 66 N. Mulberry St., Wilmington, or the Murphy Theatre, 50 W. Main St., Wilmington.

Arrangements are under the direction of REYNOLDS-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 327 N. South St., Wilmington.
