Dr. Edmund Ravenel received his degree in medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in 1819 and began practice at his profession in Charleston. In 1824 he took an active part in the organization of the Medical College. He afterwards removed to his country home and devoted himself to planting. During the summers he lived on Sullivan's Island where he made his collection of shells now in the Charleston Museum.

Dr. Ravenel married twice. First to Charlotte Matilda Ford, daughter of Timothy Ford & Sarah Amelia deSaussure; and second to Louisa Cordes Ford, daughter of Timothy Ford and Mary Magdalen Prioleau. He had one daughter, Mary Louisa Ravenel by his 1st wife who died several days after his daughter'sr birth. He and his 2nd wife, Louisa, had seven children; Charlotte Matilda, Mary Magdalen, Theodosia, Theodosia, Emma, Theodosia Ford, Dr. Edmund Ravenel.
