Funeral service for Mrs. Mabel Cora Crew Downs was held at the First United Methodist Church, Montgomery, on Wednesday, June 24, at 3 p.m., with the Rev. Jimmy Walker officiating. Burial was in Mount Zion Cemetery, Montgomery. Visitation was at the church on Tuesday, June 23, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. until service time.

Mrs. Downs, 86, passed away on Monday, June 22, 2009, at her residence in Montgomery after a lengthy illness. She was born Oct. 17, 1922, to the union of the late Frank Willet Crew and Mary Ola Garner Crew. She retired from LSU in Baton Rouge.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul C. Downs Sr.; a son, Paul C. Downs Jr.; sister, Betty Jo Crew Rasberry and her husband, C.E. Rasberry; brother, Frank Willet Crew Jr.; and a grandson, David Ruble.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Rosemary Downs Ruble, of Montgomery; grandsons, Charles and Brandon Ruble, both of Montgomery; granddaughter, Melissa Allyn, of Denham Springs; great-grandchildren, Conley and Paul Allyn, and Christina Bowlin, all of Denham Springs; great-great-grandchildren, Kaylee and Kayleigh Bowlin; sister-in-law, Sarah Crew; nephew, Danny Crew and family; niece, Barbara McKinney and family and Gayle Johnson and family; numerous cousins and many close friends.

Pallbearers were Charles Ruble, Brandon Ruble, Conley Allyn, Paul Allyn, Kenneth Neal, Frank Bandy, Danny Crew and John Garner. Honorary pallbearers are James Otis Garner, Carlos Brady, Jack Smith and Billy Giddens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Montgomery.
