From a old Boston family, dating to 1630.


Arrived in San Francisco in 1852. He originally went to El Dorado County. Returned to Wisconsin and traveling by wagon train brought his family to California.

Baxter's was named for Joseph Baxter, on whose ranch the restaurants were built. His father-in-law, Michael Pedler, founded the ranch, and Pedler Hill in Amador County is said to have been named for him.

Joseph Quincy Baxter died at the Baxter's Ranch on Baxter Grade outside of Auburn.
