Flora S. Rose, age 80, a longtime Williamsburg resident, passed away Tuesday, November 25, 2003 at the Baptist Regional Medical Center in Corbin after a short illness.Born September 15, 1923, in Whitley County, Flora was the seventh child of James Levi Smith and Ida Smith. Her parents preceded her in death as did her three brothers and three sisters.Flora grew up in Whitley County and began teaching at age 17. She touched many lives, encouraging and helping her students to achieve their dreams. She taught in seven schools throughout the area, from a one room building to the college level. She taught with the Cumberland College evening program for almost ten years. After 43 years in the classroom, she retired from Whitley County High School in 1984. She was able to share with her students, a love and knowledge of English literature, grammar and journalism. She was involved with the publication of the Whitley County High School Yearbook and was a sponsor of the BETA Club.In 1945, Flora married Edward Rose. He preceded her in death as did a daughter Libbie Rose Dodd. Flora resided in the Highland Park area and was a longtime member of the Highland Park Baptist Church. Her family and students will remember her as a classy lady with inner strength. She will be missed.Lovingly known as "MAMA", Flora is survived by three grandchildren, David Dodd and wife, Demetra, Carl H. Dodd Jr. and wife, Patsy, all of Keavy and Lorana "Loni" Dodd-Woodall of Austin, Texas along with several great-grandchildren. Flora is also survived by Joedy Smith and wife, Ericka of McIntosh, Florida, Jarvis Smith and wife, Nobu of Verne, Howard Smith and wife, Letha of Cincinnati, Ohio, Helen Parks and husband, Gerald of Westchester, Ohio, Marie Parks and husband, Raymond of Verne, Naomi Sears and husband, Ed of Verne, Mary Alice Cureton and husband, Robert of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; other relatives and many dear friends. Flora also leaves special family, Joseph D. Early and Irene Peace.Funeral services were held Friday, November 28 at the Croley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Doyle Lester and Rev. Roger Hall officiating. Graveside services were conducted Saturday, November 29 in the Highland Cemetery. For those desiring, a memorial in Flora's memory to one's local library of choice is suggested by the family.
