Archibald Smith was born, on 16 Jun 1863, in Willamette, Lane, Oregon, to the family of Samuel and Mary Ann [Van Dine] Smith. His mother gave birth to 11 children, of which, by 1900, only six of them remained living. Arch's father was from Missouri and his mother from Indiana.

Mr. Archibald Smith, a farmer, was married to Miss Meda Schneider in 1894 and after his death on 22 Feb 1903, his remains were laid to rest in the 'Coburg IOOF Cemetery'. His widow met and later was married to, Mr. George Wesley Catching, on 07 Nov 1908; this was also his second marriage. They made their home at, 346 North 7th., Springfield, Oregon and had no known children. Upon her second husband's death on 30 Jun 1925 in Eugene, Oregon. He was laid to rest in the cemetery of his childhood, Riddle Cemetery, Riddle, Oregon. Then on Meda's death in Portland, Oregon on 12 Jun 1936, her remains were shipped back down to the, Coburg IOOF Cemetery, where her 1st husband's remains had been buried and her's too were laid to rest.
