Marian Mergel, 82, of Benton City passed away October 18, 2008, at Agape Care with family at her side.

Mom was born in Webster, South Dakota on December 12, 1925, to Leo and Agnes Mattecheck. During the Depression, her family moved to Long Beach, California, which was the beginning of several traveling adventures.

After attending her brother, Fr. Leo's ordination in Chicago, mom and her brother, "Bumpy" (Frank) rode his Indian motorcycle back to Portland, OR.

Mom earned her welding card and worked as "Rosie the Riveter" with her sister Delores during World War II. After the war, the family traveled to Alaska to homestead. Later the family moved back to the lower 48 settling in the Portland/Mt. Hood area.

It was in Portland that Mom met Loren Mergel. They were married in 1951 and settled in Benton City, WA in 1957. Marian was a "stay at home" mom raising 6 children.
