Obituary in Wausau Daily Record Herald, July 1925

Robert Hughes, County Pioneer, 80 passes away Resident of Marathon county for sixty-four years dies Saturday. Robert Hughes of Edgar, and old resident of marathon County died at St Mary's hospital Saturday July 25, at 1:20 o' clock in the morning after a lingering illness of months.

The deceased was born in Maine, February 6, 1845, and at the age of two years moved to Marathon County, where they settled what them was a wilderness about twenty miles west of Mosinee.

He 'ran' the Wisconsin River for six years, after which he started a home for himself. He was married to Mary Keating of Waupon, Sept 25, 1870, and they lived on their farm for 38 years. During this time he was engaged in logging, After he retired from farming he moved to Edgar where he lived until his death.

He is survived by his widow, four children, and 15 grandchildren. the chilcre are Mrs (Mary) August Juneman of Statford, Mrs (Anna)Bert Manley, Mosinee, Frank Hughes of Halder and Allan Hughes of Rapid City, South Dakota, all of whom were present at his funeral which was held at Halder , July 25 1925. there also suvived four brothers and one sister: Thomas, john Frank and Garrett Hughes and Mrs Ellen Leonard Sargent of Wausau.

Interment was in the Halder cemetery. The flower girls were Marie and Irene Hughes , granddaughters. the pall-bearers were A. J Cherney, Ed Pfrang, Frank Kurtzweill, and Mike Schill of Edgar.

Among those present at the funeral were Mrs Len Sargent and daurter, Katherine, Mrs Ellen Sargent, George and Charles Sargernt, Mrs Mary Vanderleest, and Thomas Taylor of Wausau. Thomas Hughes Sr., Thomas Hughes Jr., Garrett Hughes, Jerry Bradley, Mr and Mrs Laurie Weber , Mr and Mrs James Hayes, Ed Hayes, Mr and Mrs John Kaiese of statford, and Frank Hughes of Park Falls, Miss Lizzie Keating of Jannesville MN, and Mr and Mrs Trombly of Chicago.
