Newspaper article - Grand Rapids Herald-Review, Grand Rapids, Minnesota - 14 January 1942:
Frank Kelm, 28 years of age, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward L. Kelm of Grand Rapids, was instantly killed in a copper mine at Morenci, Arizona, last Thursday. Mr. Kelm was pit foreman, and was inspecting a power shovel which was operating where a wall of rock had been blasted down. One drill hole of powder, amounting to 600 pounds, had not been set off in the blast, and exploded when the dipper of the shovel struck it. The resulting explosion killed Mr. Kelm instantly, and injured three other men, one seriously.
The remains of the blast victim were prepared for shipment and sent to Grand Rapids. Funeral services are being conducted this afternoon at two o'clock from the Libbey Funeral Home.
Anxious to serve his country in time of war, Frank Kelm had enlisted in the navy. He was on his last week's work with the Phelps-Dodge corporation in the copper mine, expected to leave on January 12 for naval training.
Surviving relatives include his parents, two brothers, Fred of Grand Rapids and Erwin of Minneapolis; and three sisters, Mrs. John Murphy (Adele) of Minneapolis, and Betty and Mary Jane.
