RAYMOND HONORS VETERAN’S MEMORY
Late Cyril Allred Buried With Semi-Military Honors at Raymond
RAYMOND, March 3 – With semi-military honors, Pte. Cyril Allred, the Raley farmer and ex-service man who died of influenza-pneumonia last Sunday, was laid to rest here yesterday. A full military funeral would have been given the deceased veteran had there been sufficient time to make the necessary arrangements with the G.W.V.A. at Lethbridge.
The body arrived from Raley with the morning train from Cardston and it was met by the local G.W.V.A. members and returned men, who formed an escort to the home of the mother, Mrs. Harry Allred. Here the body lay in state until 12:30 p.m. being viewed by many old-time friends and sympathizers. The funeral was from the family residence to the Opera House, the pall bearers being all veterans of the great war... The coffin was draped in the folds of the Union Jack for which the departed veteran had fought and received wounds which finally resulted in his death.
At the Opera House a large congregation assembled to do honor to the young soldier and citizen. Numerous floral tributes from the G.W.V.A., Red Cross and private individuals covered the coffin. Many Raley and Spring Coulee friends were present, testifying to the high esteem in which Mr. Allred was held by his neighbors...
...There were a number of speakers called to the stand; all extolling the happy disposition, kindness, total devotion, courage and patriotism of the departed. It was pointed out that he had been a volunteer, his quiet response to the call of duty showing that his life was influenced always by lofty ideals. The speakers were all friends of Mr. Allred... Paul Redd, formerly of the aviation corp. blew the last Post and the body of another hero who, though privileged to return to his beloved Canada, finally made the supreme sacrifice.
Pte. Allred leaves a wife, who was Miss White, of Winnifred, an aged mother, and a number of brothers and sisters to mourn his loss. He was 27 years of age and was born in Mesa, Arizona, immigrating to Canada 17 years ago.
