Date and place of birth from Revolutionary War pension application.

While a resident of New Windsor, Orange County, New York, he enlisted in January 1776, serving as a private in Captain Leonard Nicoll's Company, Colonel McClaghry's New York Regiment and was discharged in the fall of 1777, having served about twenty two months. He enlisted in November 1777, serving as an express rider under Quartermaster Uriah Mitchell and was discharged February 1778. He enlisted in the winter of 1778 and served two months and twenty days with his team transporting supplies under General Hand. He enlisted in the spring of 1778 and served two weeks in Captain Nicoll's Company. He was allowed a pension on his application executed September 4, 1832, while a resident of Elmira, New York to which place he had removed to in May 1815 from New Windsor, New York. At the time of his application he was a minister of the gospel (pension application). There is no record of his surviving widow applying for benefits.

Methodist Episcopal Church was organized in 1815. Benjamin Westlate local preacher. Among the first members were Benjamin Westlake, Samuel Westlake and wife, Hannah Shute, James Taylor and wife, William F. Hull and wife, Obediah Thorne and wife, David Holmes and wife, Lanah Westlake, Phillip Smith.

Gravesite Details

His remains were buried in a cemetery on the Arnot property, known as the Westlake Cemetery, south of Sayre street and just west of the Lehigh railroad before being removed with other family members to Maple Grove Cemetery.
