Thomas J. MAWHORTER, was the son of William and Prudence (Pierson) Mawhorter, of Scottish descent, an early family in Noble Co. Indiana.
He attended local schools, graduated from Fort Wayne College, 1872.
He was converted in June 1873, and baptized by Rev. Dodge. He felt his need to do more, but also felt he was unqualified.
He married Arminda "Mindie" Rendel in May 17, 1874, in Noble Co. Ind.
To this union was born ten children.
He served as deacon, SS Supt., and other offices in his church, but in 1885, he entered Hillsdale College, MI, to pursue more education, having worked on the Railroad to obtain funds. Soon after, however family sickness called him home. He began to preach in local churches and his church asked that he be ordained. He was ordained to the Freewill Baptist ministry, May 15, 1887. Several ministers, including Rev. Rendel, Prof. R. Dunn, and others were on his ordaining council. He immediately began pastoring the Wawaka Church, (now Cosperville Freewill Bapt); other pastorates included Pleasant Ridge, Haw Patch, S. Milford, and he served Jones Chapel and Rome City churches, as well.
He attended the Gen. Conference when held at Mineapolis; and in 1897 he was delegate to the Gen. Conf. at Lowell, Mass; then delegate to Ocean Park Gen. Conference, 1898, and aa delegate to Harpers Ferry, Conference in 1901.
He was recognized as a strong and forceful speaker, and in Noble County was an advocant in the cause of temperance.

"He has been prosperous in his work and has baptized 45 converts."
---from "Cyclopedia of Free Baptists,", pub. 1889, by Burgess and Ward, and, Samuel Advoord's History of Noble Co. Indiana.
