From the Beaumont Enterprise, Friday, September 10, 1971, p. 3B:

Hilyard Coleman Gatlin, 78, of 2345 Ashley, died in St. Elizabeth Hospital at 8:58 p.m. Thursday after a sudden illness.

He was a native of Liberty County and had lived in Beaumont since 1912.

Gatlin was with Stedman Co. 21 years and was with W. W. Thames for over 10 years. After his retirement he was associated with L. D. Gale Properties.

Gatlin was a 50-year Mason and a member of Masonic Lodge 1165. He also was a 50-year member of American Legion Post 33. He also was a member of the Knights of Pythias, Last Man's Club and the Senior Citizens Club.

He was a veteran of World War I and was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lee Gatlin; one son, Jack L. Gatlin of Beaumont, a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Anna M. Gatlin of Beaumont, and four grandchildren.

Arrangements will be announced by L. M. Williams and Sons Funeral Home.
