Married to Rebecca Vienna Marlette on March 6, 1890 on Orange County, Indiana.

Married to Millie J. Perrin on July 20, 1905 in Orange County, Indiana. They were divorced in March 1910 in Vigo County, Indiana. According to their divorce decree, Robert sued Millie for divorce. He alleged that she had cursed him, drew a pistol and threatened to kill him, and told him that he was not the father of Marguerite. He was ordered to pay $5.00 per month support out of his weekly pay of $9.00, and Millie was granted custody of the children.

Married Nancy Ellen (Gilliatt) Teaford on 4 May 1920 in Clark County, Indiana.

His death certificate reported the following: Place of death was at home, cause of death was coronary sclerosis, residence was 321 Maple in French Lick, Indiana, occupation was retired farmer, marital status was widower.

He is buried with first wife Rebecca and third wife Nancy. The stone contains the names of Robert and Rebecca's children, but only three are buried in the same cemetery: Ollis, Nellie, and Laurel.

Robert wrote the following to be used as his obituary: "At the age of 16 he joined the Christian Church at South Liberty - sometimes fell from grace but since 1920 has lived a true devoted Christian life. Having spent more than 40 years of his life behind the counter selling thousands of dollars worth of goods for different firms he died a poor man at the age of 80+ years of age. I prefer Ben Schmutzler as undertaker. Bury me in my gray suit."
