California Pioneer of 1857 Who Also Pioneered Eagle Valley Passes, 28 Oct 1940
Richland-(Special) Miranda E. Beck, passed away Monday, October 18, at the home of her daughter, Nora Moody, at the age of 85 years, six months, 26 days.
Mrs. Beck when two years old in year 1857, crossed the plains from Missouri to California with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pardon Babcock. Here she lived for several years. And in the year 1870 she was married to LeRoy Williams.
In the year 1882 Mr. and Mrs. Williams with their five children, moved to Eagle Valley. Here Mr. Williams died the following winter, leaving Mrs. Williams with five small children to provide and care for. The valley at this time was almost totally isolated with a few settlers. By working where she could and with the help of relatives she managed to get along quite well. For seven years she worked for George W. Moody St., who kept a hotel or "stopping" place on the old Moody place. Later, she kept a hotel in Sparta when it was a booming mining town with a population of 3,000 and a "China town" also.
In 1892 Mrs. Williams was married to Joseph Beck who kept the post office in the valley at the time. The site of the post office was in Mr. Beck's home. The present home of Henry Williams. The only store in the valley then was near the post office, the present home of Cecil Graven.
Mr. Beck died in the year 1905.
Mrs. Beck has witnessed and also experienced some very interesting and exciting episodes in the early historical development of Eagle Valley. In this early period she was always here and there helping when needed. At births or deaths she was there to lend a helping hand, and sharing in her neighbors' joys and sorrow.
In her last years she enjoyed relating all this early history to her many great-grandchildren and young friends. Mrs. Beck is survived by two daughters, Ida Ritch, of Baker, and Nora Moody, of Richland, OR; one son Henry Williams of Richland; two other sons: Will Williams and Leonard Williams are both deceased. She is also survived by one sister, Adaline Young, of Tacoma, WA, twenty grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and 10 great great grandchildren,. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church with interment in the Eagle Valley Cemetery
