Richard D. Tennant was the oldest child of Peter Tennant and Elizabeth Brown. In 1818, he married Mary Margaret Brookover in Monangalia County, Virginia (became West Virginia in 1863. They had eleven children: Eugenus, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Priscilla, Louamy, Peter, Jane, Drucilla, Enos D, Jacob John, and Nimrod Adam.

From about 1845 to 1853, he was the United States postmaster of Jakes Run, in Monangalia County.

Richard and his younger brother Adam were apparently very bushy in appearance and were known as "Hairy Dick" and "Hairy Ad".
