Ann Hutton was born in Derbyshire, England and married Daniel Archer, also of Derbyshire. Early in 1850 Daniel and Ann took their family to the United States to live, settling in Middleton, Dane County, WI. In 1873 the family moved to Albany OR, and a year later moved to Yolo County where Daniel purchased a partially improved tract of 400 acres on Cache Creek, in an area which adjoins the tiny town of Madison, just north of Winters. Daniel sold 40 acres of the land to the railroad for a townsite. Upon completion of the Vacavile and Clear Lake Railroad through that section in 1876 land values rose rapidly and soon Madison became an important commercial center. Cottonwood being devoid of shipping facilities, Madison secured the business which had formerly gone to Woodland. Daniel and Ann lived the rest of their lives in the area and many of their descendants are buried in Cottonwood Cemetery, near the town of Madison.
