Mr. James H. Daniel, one of the most prominent citizens of this section and a man known throughout the state, died tonight at 11 o'clock after a brief illness in the 74th year of age. The announcement of his death will come as a sad surprise to his many friends and admirers, for though he had been in ill health for some time because of his advanced age, his death was entirely unexpected.
The funeral ceremonies took place Friday morning at Millen cemetery, where a large concourse of relatives and acquaintances gathered to pay their last tribute of respect to the deceased. He is survived by several children.
The above dispatch brings sad news of the death of Hon. J. H. Daniel, pioneer citizen of the town of Millen. He was born in the 68th district of Burke County, Sept. 3rd, 1831. In 1852 he became a citizen of Millen. He was happily married in 1858 to Miss Mary Hendrix Gray and six children blessed their union, three of whom survive him.
Watching the progress of Millen from its darkest hours when the touch of Sherman's hands to its present newly acquired role of the county seat of Jenkins county he has stood her staunchest friend. By his long association he earned the title "Father of Millen" and was venerated and loved alike by all.
He was prominent in the civil and political circles of both Burke county and Millen. He belonged to the Royal Arch Lodge.
After an eventful life of 74 years this stately old gentleman of the old South passed to his reward beyond this pale of tears. His life was exemplary and through its long course he was a conscientious christian.
His death is a distinct loss to our county ans state and many friends throughout the state join in sincerest consolation to the bereaved family.
