* Mrs. Esther Anna Hulse, 94 years old, a former resident of Big Springs and Lawrence, a survivor of Quantrill's raid, died Sunday night at her home in Cherryvale where she had lived since 1879. Funeral services were held in Cherryvale this afternoon from the First Methodist church of which she was the last charter member. Born Esther Anna Brown, November 4, 1844 at Richmond, Indiana she came with her parents to live at Big Springs. Her father author of antislavery articles for a New York publication was slain at Topeka in 1861 by Missouri bushwhackers. In 1863 she married Thomas Eugene Murtha a government employee in Lawrence. They were living at a hotel here when Quantrill and his men staged their raid, August 21, 1863. Murtha was slain and Mrs. Murtha narrowly escaped death when a bullet ripped thru her clothing. Mrs. Murtha moved to Chanute in 1865 where she married Richard James Hulse. They moved to Cherryvale in 1879 to open a dry goods store. Mrs. Hulse organized the first Red Cross chapter in Cherryvale. She was an active Methodist. She broke the ground for the first church in Cherryale in 1880. She was a member of the Ladies of the GAR, Rebekahs, Royal Neighbors adn the Kansas Federation of Womens clubs. She is survived by two daughters, one son, and three grandchildren.
