The daughter of Thomas and Jemima (Jones) Mills, Sarah was born into a Quaker family who had been among the earliest Quakers to settle in the South. She moved westward to Ohio when she was young, and married "One-Eyed" John Hodson at the Fairfield Monthly Meeting there in Highland County. They raised a large family together, moving to different places in the Midwest, including Henry County, Indiana and Marshall County, Iowa. She died before her husband and was buried at the cemetery of the Friends meeting she had been attending at the time with her family.
