OBITUARY / MAY 22, 1903

Luther B. Bratton, Sr., of Limestone, whose death was mentioned in Tuesday's Republican, was born August 5, 1833, in Daviess County, Indiana, and came of an old New England family.

His father was one of the pioneer settlers of Indiana. At the age of 23 the subject of this sketch left home with $23 as his sole financial resources and went to Minnesota, where he took up a homestead claim near Mankato, upon which he resided for about a year.

In 1859, he came to Kankakee County and bought 120 acres of partially improved land in Limestone. On January 12, 1860, he married Miss Ursula E. Bowdle. Nine children were born of the marriage.

Mr. Bratton has always been a Republican and was a member of Kankakee Lodge A.F. and A.M.

He has held offices of trust his township; among them that of school director, which he held for over thirty years.

The deceased was a man of unquestioned integrity. He was a lover of home, never being so happy as when surrounded by his children. When almost breathing his last, he asked if they were all present and being answered in the aftermath sank back with a smile of satisfaction.
