New London, NH - Virginia Lee (Anthony) Cooper Soule, 81, died Aug. 27, 2009, at The Clough Center in New London.
She and her twin sister, the fourth and fifth children of her parents, Roscoe Tate and Winifred (Clarke) Anthony, were born Aug. 30, 1927, at their grandparents' home in Haverford, Pa. Her father worked at that time for his father-in-law, Louis S. Clarke, an automotive pioneer and a founder of the Autocar Company in 1896. In 1929, the family returned to Palm Beach, Fla., where her parents had met and married.
There followed many happy childhood years in a loving, extended family. The school year was spent in Palm Beach and long summers on Lake Sunapee, N.H., at an old farmhouse in Burkehaven, which her parents bought in 1931 and her mother named "Rockwall Farm." Somehow during World War II, when gas for civilians was tightly rationed, the family managed to get north every summer so that with much help from local farmers, they produced a large "Victory Garden".
In Her Life: Virginia graduated with honors from Westover School in Middlebury, Conn., in 1945 and in 1949, cum laude, from Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vt. Returning to Palm Beach, she taught for several years at Palm Beach Private School, which she and her siblings had attended, before heading off with her twin to take on "The Big Apple," New York City. Years there were filled with many friends and good times and two delightful jobs; at the Ladies' Home Journal and in the Rockefeller Family offices at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, which included Nelson's first-and landslide-election as Governor of New York in 1958. In 1960, she married Neal Cooper and their two sons, Alan Anthony Cooper and Douglas Clarke Cooper, were born in Princeton, N.J., and Washington, D.C. In 1978, returning to their summer roots, Virginia and her sons moved to New London, N.H. Both boys graduated from Kearsarge Regional High School. Alan as co-valedictorian in 1980 and Doug in 1982 after "the happiest four years of my life".
Virginia, a Realtor, spent a number of pleasurable years affiliated with Brad White and Gerry Putnam at White and White, Inc. She served for two terms as a supervisor of the checklist. Having, after college, dreamed of living close to a ski area where she could ski during the uncrowded mid-week, she spent 15 delicious years doing just that at King Ridge.
Virginia was predeceased by both her brothers, Roscoe T. Anthony Jr. and Louis Clarke Anthony. She is survived by her sister, Mary Anthony Smith of Atlanta, and her twin, Winifred Anthony Stearns of Hanover, N.H., with whom she has shared a lifetime of happy memories. She is also survived by her two sons who have been the most important part of her life since the day they were born: Alan, a CPA in Sunapee and Douglas, New London, and an innumerable flock of nephews and nieces of two generations, all of them dear to her.
Services: There will be no services. Her ashes will join the wildflowers in the meadow at Rockwall Farm, Sunapee, on which she joyfully donated a conservation easement in 2008 to the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests.
