JIM PREWITT, 67, KILLED BY TRAIN
Body of Antioch Farmer Found Near Bertley Street Crossing
The body of Jim Prewitt, 67, farmer living near Antioch church, northeast of Moberly, was found about 7 o'clock this morning on the Wabash right-of-way about 100 yards east of the Bertley street crossing.
Apparently he was struck by Wabash freight train No. 98, eastbound for Hannibal, when it departed here about 4 o'clock this morning. Prewitt was killed instantly, the several head injuries he suffered proving immediately fatal.
Wabash officials told Coroner H. C. Griffiths they had received no report of the accident from members of the train crew, who obviously were not aware that Prewitt, walking on or near the trach, had been struck.
The first discovery of the body was made about 7 o'clock by a boy, Clarence Brown, 460 East Rollins street, walking along the track at that time.
The boy went directly to the police station to report the death. While he was there Prewitt's body was found by a Wabash section crew setting out along the track.
Dr. Griffiths said no inquest would be held.
Mr. Prewitt was a life long resident of Randolph county. He is survived by his wife; a son, Lester Prewitt of Moberly; two daughters, Mrs. Emmett Forrest and Mrs. Mabel Bates, both of Moberly; a sister, Mrs. W. M. Rice of Boise, Idaho; two brothers, W. E. Prewitt of Sioux City, Iowa, and E. A. Prewitt of Kansas City; a half sister, Mrs. Maggie Muff of Kansas City; and 12 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
The body will remain at the Snow Funeral home until tomorrow morning when it will be taken to the home of the son, Lester Prewitt, 1107 North Ault street.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Monday afternoon at Antioch church, northeast of Moberly. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.
