Sarah was one of 10 children born to Robert Washington and Margaret Marie (Kent) Lumpkin. She married Finley Enos Holloway on December 29, 1875 in Linden, Dallas, Iowa. Finley and Sarah had 8 children together. Cora Belle (1876-1880), Mary Redding (1878-1880), Laura Ellen (1882-1956), Josephine Ida (1885-1945), Henry Ellsworth (1887-1952), Mabel Alice (1893-1990), Myrl Marguerite (1894-1961) and Lester Abel (1898-1962).
Finley, Sarah and their two youngest daughters are living in Kansas at the time of the 1880 census. Some family stories say that Sarah was homesick or that the family was suffering from illness and wanted to return to Iowa. Their daughters Cora and Mary reportedly contracted the measles in Kansas or on the way back to Iowa where they passed away within days of each other. It is unknown where Cora and Mary are buried at this time. Some believe they may have been buried in West Linn cemetery near other Holloway relatives, but the cemetery has no record of their burial.
By 1910 Finley and Sarah are living in Esbon, Jewell County, Kansas where they remained for the rest of their lives.
