A son of Lewis and Susan Young. Joseph was twice married. His first wife, Joanna "Annie" Sipe of Somerset died November 30, 1881, in Pittsburgh, leaving four young children. He married Mary T. Ritchey on April 29, 1888, at Rays Hill. She was a daughter of Jacob S. and Lucinda Ritchey, aged 24.
He lived on Tustin Street in the Oakland area of Pittsburg, Allegheny County, PA, near the glass factories along the Monongahela River. In 1880 he worked as a "puddler" in the factory.
