Son of John & Catherine Catrina (Van Vliet) DeWitt.

Father of:
Sarah deWitt 1818 – 1887
Catherine Elizabeth deWitt 1820 – 1882
Julia deWitt 1824 – 1912
Harriet deWitt 1826 – 1838
Louis Bevier duBois deWitt 1830 – 1905

John deWitt was Government Agent at the military station of West Point. I do not know if he was educated at the Academy. Interestingly, his son Louis, my great-grandfather, married the daughter of General Henry Brewerton, who was Superintendent of West Point from 1845 until 1852. Gen. Brewerton was succeeded as Superintendent by Gen. Robert E. Lee.

John's son, Louis Bevier duBois deWitt, moved south to Baltimore and changed the first letter of his surname to lower case d. He brought with him a lovely portrait of his mother Harriet Clark DeWitt, painted around 1820 by noted American artist, Thomas Sully. The painting is now in the possession of my cousin, son of Dad's oldest brother Cornelius, who had inherited the painting by virtue of primogeniture. My great-grandfather Louis eventually settled in Fortress Monroe, VA, had three daughters and one son, and was widowed early. He and the children moved in with his older sister and all, except for my grandfather Cornelius, migrated west to San Francisco by 1880. Cornelius finished his education and became a banker and cotton broker in Norfolk. He and my grandmother had ten children and they all grew up in Virginia Beach, VA. My father Paul was the second youngest. He died recently at age 97, the last surviving family member, most of whom lived into their late eighties and nineties.

No suggestion, but I'm hoping this message goes to Martha DeWitt, who gave the info on John Huik DeWitt.

I've been following this DeWitt family from Peter DeWitt (b. 1722) and his wife Rachel Radcliff. Rachel's sister Jannetje was married to Rev Eggo Tonckens Van Hoevenberg, the first dominie of the Dutch Reformed Church in Rhinebeck, NY. Jannetje and Eggo were my 5th-great-grandparents.

I'm especially intrigued by John's middle name as I also have Huik/Huyck/Huyk/Houck ancestors. Do you know how John fits into the Huik family?
