Mary Helen Brubeck, 90, of Salem, Va., passed away at home on Saturday, February 16, 2008. Mrs. Brubeck was born on November 16, 1917, in Louisville, Ky. She was predeceased by her husband, William O. Brubeck, in 1993; first husband, Earl B. Gustafson, in 1946; her parents, the Rev. and Mrs. R.S. New Sr.; and sisters, Juanita New Abernathy and Manora Gilmore. Survivors include two sons, Earl B. Gustafson Brubeck, of Middletown, Md., and William O. Brubeck Jr., of Arlington, Va.; a grandson, Jeremy Earl Brubeck; a greatgranddaughter, Emily, of Williamsport, Md.; a brother and his wife, Ricey and Justin New, of Alexandria, Va.; two nieces; and three nephews. Mrs. Brubeck retired from the Roanoke County-Salem school systems in 1983, where she served as reading-language arts supervisor. She was also a supervisor with the Warren County Schools before coming to Roanoke County. She taught in the public schools in the states of Virginia, South Carolina and Georgia. She previously worked as a statistical analyst for the Department of Labor in Washington, D.C. during World War II. She received her BS and Master's degrees from Georgia Southern University and the University of South Carolina. A private family memorial service will be held at a future date.
