Born the first of five children to Jessie (Mackey) and Homer Johnson on June 17, 1919, in Boise City, Okla., she was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John H. Johnson; son, John R. Johnson; and one brother and one sister.
She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Christine Johnson; daughter and son-in-law, Alice Johnson and John Lavery; granddaughter, Portia Johnson; step-grandchildren Jeremiah Thompson and Serenity, Daniel and Samuel Oswalt; and sisters, Virginia Johnson and Ruth McBride.
Jessie enlisted in the Women's Army Corps during World War II and achieved the rank of first lieutenant.
While stationed at Amarillo Air Field, she met her future husband of 56 years, Army Air Corps Flight Officer John Hermie Johnson.
After separating from the service, she and John married on Dec. 7, 1946, in Raton, N.M., and moved to Boise City where their three children were born.
They settled permanently in Cheyenne in 1958.
A talented artist, Jessie worked in various media and was a charter member and past president of the Cheyenne Artist Guild.
She also devoted a lot of time to her children, including serving many years as a Cub Scout den mother and Girl Scout Leader.
In later years, Jessie made her home with Steve and Christine. As Jessie's primary caregiver, Chris ensured that Jessie received the love and care she deserved after she could no longer care for herself.
