KILLED IN AUTO CRASH

Herman F. Ehinger, general manager of the Citizens Telephone company of this city, and Hugh Hite, of Detroit, former local resident, were fatally injured in an auto crash five miles south of Anderson late Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Ehinger and son James were not seriously injured.

Three Killed, Others Hurt In Collisions

Herman Ehinger, Decatur Phone Official, Hugh Hite, of Detroit, Die.

DECATUR, Ind., Aug. 17---Funeral arrangements were being made today for Herman F. Ehinger, aged 44, of Decatur, and Hugh Hite, aged 56, of Detroit, who were killed late Tuesday in an auto crash on State Road No. 67, five miles south of Anderson. The car in which they were riding, driven by Ehinger’s son, James, aged 18, skidded on wet pavement and collided with a truck driven by P. G. Britts, aged 37, of Indianapolis.

Ehinger and Hite were asleep in the back seat of the car. Ehinger’s wife, Lea, aged 41, was reported better today. She suffered brain concussion, chest injuries and shock. James suffered shock and minor cuts. Britts suffered minor cuts and a hip injury.

Ehinger was killed instantly while Hite died an hour later without regaining consciousness. The party was returning from Indianapolis. Hite, a native of Decatur, -was on a two-week’s visit here. He will be buried in Decatur.

Known in Fort Wayne

Prominent in Decatur civic affairs, Ehinger had been manager of the Citizens Telephone Company, since 1918. He was well known in Fort Wayne, being a member of the Country Club there. He also was a member of the Decatur Knights of Columbus and the Elks Lodge. He had been financial chairman of the centennial here in 1936 and was director of the Indiana Telephone Association at the time of his death.

His survivors include the widow, two sons, James and Charles; the mother, Mrs. Carrie Ehinger; one brother, Dick, and three sisters, Jeanette, at home; Mrs. Lawrence Kleinhenz, Decatur, and Sister M. Antoinette, Evanston, Ill.

Hite was in charge of the tax department for the State of Indiana for the Federal Housing Administration in Detroit. He is survived by two sisters, Madge, of near Boston, Mass., and Fanny, of Chicago; two daughters, Mrs. Virginia Atchinson and Jane Hite, both of Detroit, and one son, Robert Hite, of Detroit.

Britts is a Western Union telegraph lineman and was driving a company truck.
