Wilberta was born and raised in South Pittsburg, Marion County, Tennessee. She lived in Richard City and had two young sons at the time of her husband's early death. They then moved to Chattanooga where she worked as a beautician at Reaves Beauty Salon for about 20 years and then Hungate's Beauty Salon. Wilberta's father William McKeever Patton served as City Recorder and Justice of the Peace of South Pittsburg for a number of years.
