EAST PEORIA - Duane Harry Menk, 78, of East Peoria and Harlingen, Texas, passed away at 2:28 a.m. on Monday, June 8, 2009, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, ER.
He was born on March 7, 1931, in Bertha, Minn., to Harry D. and Ella Voeltz Menk. He married Jane Janovetz Heer on Sept. 26, 1986, in Peoria. She survives.
He also is survived by three children, Susan (Bob) Sindelir of Baudette, Minn., Harry (Mary Melvin) Menk of Plymouth, Minn., and Jeff (Kay) Menk of Hamilton, Mont.; three stepchildren, Holly (Jeff) Ott of Dunlap and twins, Jason (Alycia) Heer of Chicago and Jeremy (Sarah) Heer of Brookfield, Ill.; nine grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four nieces and nephews; and a son-in-law, Noel Cornelius.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Donna Menk Cornelius; one brother, Emroy Menk; and one sister, Edna Ella Menk.
Duane was an electronics technician for the National Weather Service, retiring in 1993.
He was a Korean War U.S. Air Force veteran.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, American Legion and N.A.R.F.E.
Duane enjoyed fishing, reading, cooking, gardening and fixing everything around the house, including family and neighbors. He was involved with his church and was a great hugger. He loved his children and grandchildren.
