Max Haydn Hollis, 88, died Aug. 20 at the Wyoming Medical Center in Casper.

He was born June 12, 1921, in Peoria, Ill., to Herschel Tillman and Minnie (Debow) Hollis. The family moved from Illinois to Sheridan to Gering, Neb., and finally to Cheyenne. He was a 1940 graduate of Cheyenne's Central High. He joined the United States Army in February of 1941, was active in the European Theater and was honorably discharged in December of 1945. He married Helen I. Bailey on March 8, 1947, in Cheyenne. They moved to Laramie in 1947, where he worked as a mechanic for Quality Chevrolet. They moved to McFadden in 1953, where he worked as a field mechanic for the Ohio Oil Company. They moved to Glenrock in 1957, where he worked as a mechanic for Pacific Power and Light (PP&L), and in 1962 moved to Casper and was still employed by PP&L. After the death of his first wife in 1967, he married Dorothy (Taylor) Fitzhugh in 1972, and they settled in Glenrock. He retired from PP&L in 1975. He came out of retirement in 1976 and opened an auto-repair business in Glenrock for three years. In 1979 he went to work for the Wyoming Highway Department and again retired in 1985. His hobbies were many and varied. He was a skilled musician and played in many orchestras, namely the Lynn Snider Orchestra, Wayne Morrison Orchestra, Buddy Hansen Orchestra, Chick Erickson Band, and his own Max Hollis and His Orchestra. He was an avid fisherman, had his share of guns, had too many Harley Davidson motorcycles and enjoyed to restore and display his collection of antique engines at the Wyoming State Fair.

Mr. Hollis is survived by his son, Mark (Debbie) Hollis of Douglas, and stepchildren, Bill (Dustin) Fitzhugh of Douglas, and Edna (Maurice) Neville of Edgemont, S.D.

He was preceded in death by his two wives; his parents; and his infamous dog, "Puppy."
