Some sources cite a 2nd wife, named Abigail, as the mother of his last 4 children, Sarah, Joseph, Joanna and Keziah. However, these sources also state that after John married Abigail, they lived in Newark, New Jersey. However, John's first child by this possible Abigail was Sarah, who was born about 1684, making their marriage before 1684. Based on John's pastorship, they would have not lived in Newark, New Jersey until some 8 years later, putting this information in question. There are gaps in the births of John's children: 1675, 1684, 1692, 1692 and 1696. The gap between 1675 and 1684 could lead one to assume a second wife, but then there is the gap between 1684 and 1692 not accounted for. There may have been infant deaths in those gaps not recorded.
If anyone has documentation that proves one way or the other about John having a second wife, Abigail, please contact the manager of this memorial.
John's remains were removed from the old burying ground 23 years after he died to this cemetery. A phone call to the New Jersey Historical Society in Newark in July 2004, indicated that the cemetery at First Presbyterian Church no longer exists and that many of the markers were moved to Fairmount Cemetery in Newark. It is not known whether John's marker was actually moved from First Presbyterian Church Cemetery or not. In addition, the present Newark City Hall now stands where this cemetery once was. This necessitated the removal by the church of any remains in the late 1950's to a mass grave in a memorial garden in a different section of the church grounds. The cemetery had not been maintained for some years and many grave stones were broken or were not legible. The remaining intact headstones were placed in storage in the basement.
