Fountain is the fourth child and the third son of John Hays and Priscilla McKeaig. John Hays was born about 1777 and died about 1825; Priscilla "Prissy" McKeaig Hays was born about 1781 and died about 1835. They had ten known children: James, Mary "Polly", George, Fountain, John Andrew Jackson, William Henry Harrison, Peter, Elizabeth, William Peyton, and Benjamin.

Fountain was one of the early pioneers of the State of Missouri, coming on a wagon train from Bullitt County, Kentucky, sometime around 1836 or 1837. The family settled on the north side of the Straight Fork Moreau River near Fortuna, Missouri. Part of a log house was still standing in 1977.

The 1850 census of Morgan County, Missouri, Moreau Township, indicates that Fountain was living with his wife, Eliza, 38 years old; John, 14 years old; Margaret, 12 years old; Wesley, 9 years old; Francis I., 6 years old; America, 4 years old; and Fountain W., 1 year-old. The record also indicates he was a laborer and had $360 of this world's good; that he was born in Kentucky, as was his wife and their oldest son, John; and that the other children were all born in Missouri.

Later, they had two more sons. Samuel was born in 1851 and James was born in 1856.

Some additional information for Fountain is that, in 1865 after the death of his wife, Eliza, he married for a second time to the widow Samira Peyton (Wilson) Mullins. Their only child was Robert Lee Hays (1866-1940). An interesting aside is that Samira was the mother-in-law to Fountain's son, Wesley, making Fountain the father-in-law to Samira's daughter, Lizzie.
